“Where California’s Leadership Meets the World”

The highest priority of use is for receiving Heads of State, Ambassadors, internationally recognized business and humanitarian leaders, and high-level trade and cultural delegations. Events that promote California business, trade, manufacturing, agriculture, education, the arts and historic preservation are encouraged. Any event held in the Mansion should represent a clear economic or cultural development interest to California.

In all cases, events should meet certain minimum standards of use, service, décor and hospitality appropriate to a world-class setting. Sponsors must be in attendance at their event. Stanford Mansion is not used for staff meetings, retirement celebrations, weddings or similar social events, and is not available for public rental. The Mansion is not used for political or campaign fundraisers or campaign press conferences of any kind. All event arrangements are subject to prior review and approval to ensure that the highest standards of quality are maintained.

Past Events & History

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger was the first to officially use the renovated Mansion when it officially opened on —-, 20–. Charlotte Mailliard Shultz was the first Chief of Protocol to house her office and staff at the Mansion. Among the first protocol guests of the State received by Governor Schwarzenegger were:

  • His Excellency Vicente Fox, President of Mexico
  • His Excellency Vaclav Klaus, President of the Czech Republic
  • His excellency Fredrik Reinfeldt, Prime Minister of Sweden
  • His Excellency Fidel Ramos, former President of the Philippines; and Members of Parliament
  • California Supreme Court justices and legislators
  • A Today Show interview with Governor Schwarzenegger was filmed here
  • Several Bills have been signed here
  • Former Senate Pro Tem Don Perata and Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez frequently used the Mansion

That was just the beginning.

Since then, Governors Pete Wilson, Gray Davis and Jerry Brown similarly used the Mansion to meet with global and national leaders.  Members of the Legislature use the Mansion frequently for similar gatherings, all of which involved business and political leaders from California, the United States and the world.

Why meet with state, national and global leaders?

  • California is in a bare-knuckles competition in the global and national marketplace for the attention of major businesses and investors.
  • New business development, international trade, and jobs are keys to California’s economic future.  It is also imperative to work closely with resident firms to make sure they stay here.
  • Other states are rolling out the red carpet to business and political leaders who want to make significant investments in their states.
  • Governors and Legislators are playing a key role in the subsequent negotiations with industry and as a result such meetings are taking on a greater level of significance and sophistication.

Why does California need a protocol event center?
